Education vs Sport: Which one should be Our concern?
According
to an article
from BBC, http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/development/contrasts_development_rev1.shtml,
to measure a country development is to measure its economic and human
development. What about our
country development? Indonesia economic development is developing little by
little. But poverty
is the issue that still exist.
Poverty is the issue that
can be linked to education issues. However, in some part of our country, education still
can’t be reached by some people. As the world keeps evolving, some people in
our country especially in ‘remote areas’, they don’t get enough education as
the provisions to survive in this evolving world. Vicious
circle still exists, a
condition where someone who doesn’t have a chance to get education because his
family is too poor—then
he doesn’t have chance to cut the chain of
poverty that his family experiencing, it could result another poverty in the next generation, a never ending
circle.
We know that education is an
important issues that our country still
facing until today. But what about sport and recreation issue? Quoting Ayoedji
Morakiyo, “Instead of
subscribing to drugs, violence and restiveness, the energies of idle youth can be reserved for good use in
sporting activities. Sports provide a healthy platform for youthful competition
and encourage the participation of young people in nation building.” A country that have a concern in their sport and
recreation facilities is the country that concern on it’s people’s health and
happiness. Comparing to both issue, which one the government should be Indonesian concern? And in which sector the government should spend more money?
For now, I think the country
priority is still on education. If we take a look on our constitution, it is stated in Article 31 Subsection
(1) Setiap warga negara berhak mendapat
pendidikan, or if it has
to be translated Every citizen is
entitled to education.
It’s a clear statement that define how big is our country concern in education.
Sport
and recreation, is not less important issue though. If both issues become goverment
concerns, Indonesia could be a country with educated and smart, physically active
and healthy, and also full of happy citizens.
I wrote this for an english task, but feel like posting it to my blog. Above are only my opinion.
